McQuarrie Towing & Recovery just finished training on handling and towing EVs and hybrids with Ready2Respond. More awareness is needed of the dangers of towing EVs and hybrids without proper training and equipment. This was one of the best and most well-put-together training classes we've attended. Thanks, Jeff and Kevin!

Mattapoisett Firefighters attended a 3-hour class tonight on Lithium Ion Batteries, including the hazards and dangers they create for first responders. Since these incidents would involve a variety of agencies, Chief Murray felt it was important to invite the Police, EMS, Board of Health, and Highway Departments to attend as well.

The class included the history of lithium-ion batteries, a review of general battery types and chemistries, a review of previous incidents, structure fires involving lithium-ion batteries, fires involving electric and hybrid vehicles, accidents involving electric and hybrid vehicles, mitigation options, recycling options, and necessary tools and equipment needed to protect life and property.

A big thank you to Read2Respond for teaching a great class!

Special shout out to Toyota of Dartmouth for letting us borrow an electric vehicle for this training! Thank you

Avon Fire Department Completes Lithium-Ion Battery Fire Training

Avon Fire News March 13, 2024

AVON — Interim Chief Kevin Partridge is pleased to share that the Avon Fire Department hosted a training on responding to lithium-ion battery fires.

The course, hosted by Ready2Respond, a fire training consulting agency, focused on how to effectively respond to fires caused by lithium-ion batteries. These types of batteries can be found in many products, including handheld power tools, cell phones, laptops, and electric vehicles.

In addition to training, the Avon Fire Department has been recently expanding its toolset to include equipment specifically for lithium-ion battery fires.

“We couldn’t have asked for better instructors, Deputy Fire Chiefs Kevin Galligan and Jeffery Marchetti,” Interim Chief Kevin Partridge said. “We thank them for sharing their expertise in how to control these fires.” He also expressed his thanks to the Central Auto Team of Raynham for providing a vehicle for the training.

Abington Fire Department hosted a training event for our members to become more familiar with lithium ion batteries and how we respond to and mitigate related incidents. Lithium ion batteries are becoming more prevalent in today's world, from cell phones, children's toys, power tools or electric vehicles. Although they are valuable for everyday living, these batteries are causing major concern for the fire service due to their threat of combustibility and lack of overall education as they pertain to the fire service.

This training opportunity was provided by Ready2Respond and instructed by members of our neighboring community, both of which hold the rank of Deputy Fire Chief in the City of Brockton. These men are spearheading a mission to share education with local departments with their wealth of knowledge in the subject matter.

The education provided today was tailored to how your Fire Department will respond to and mitigate incidents in conjunction with Abington Police Dept and our Board of Health, both of whom were in attendance for this invaluable presentation. With this new information our agencies can work together during incidents relating to lithium ion batteries to handle such situations in a safe and efficient manner for both citizens and public safety alike.

Thank you to Kevin Galligan and Jeff Marchetti for your instruction and expertise as well as the Board of Health for lending your newly acquired EV truck!

Members of Local 2398 are grateful to have participated in valuable lithium-ion battery training. From small household electronic devices, to EV’s, lithium-ion batteries are everywhere and they present unique challenges for fire fighting. We will continue to better our understanding of this technology, its benefits and its challenges.

Special shout out to BEST Chevrolet, the Cut Fire Fund, and Ready2Respond

Chief Lincoln Thibeault
West Bridgewater Fire Department

With lithium ion battery fire emergencies rising at an alarming rate, the West Bridgewater Fire Department conducted our first ever lithium ion battery training with Ready to Respond LLC on July 14, 2023. This was a department training drill to familiarize and educate our firefighters on the dangers of lithium ion batteries and how to respond and mitigate lithium battery emergencies.

Ready to Respond LLC did a great job during their classroom education and practical portion of the class. Their teaching was relevant to our department's needs, all of our firefighters found it to be very educational. The feedback I received from department members was very positive. They felt that the class was exactly what they were hoping for and found it very informative as we prepare to respond to these emergencies in real time. We would absolutely have them back for refresher training at a later date and would use them again in the future for any other training they offer.

Respectfully,

ASHER Training

The Town of Hanover took advantage of Ready2Respond to provide Command Level ASHER Training for Hanover Fire and Police personnel.  Both organizations have a good working relationship and have conducted ASHER training in the past however, we felt a refresher was needed for existing staff and also felt it necessary to get our newer command staff on the same page with each other.  Jeff and Chris were very easy to work with and were able to customize their presentation to meet our specific needs.  Members who attended said it was some of the best and most relevant training on ASHER that they’ve participated in.  The need for a collaborative public safety approach to these types of incidents was made crystal clear and we have taken the lessons learned from this class to strengthen our internal joint policies and procedures.  We highly recommend this to any public safet agency looking to improve.

Last week , the Kingston Fire Department hosted two training sessions focused on Lithium Ion Battery emergencies. The training was conducted by Ready 2 Respond. The KFD recently purchased specialized equipment to help mitigate these emergencies. The training was also attended by members of the Kingston Streets, Trees and Parks Department as well as representatives from the Duxbury, Pembroke , Plymouth and Plympton Fire Departments. Special thanks to Pete Whalen, Brian Mello and Kevin Ihlfeld from Marty’s GMC for providing new electric vehicle for the presentation. (Photos courtesy of KFD)
